The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
What is baptism?
Baptize: plunge, dunk or immerse
When we speak of baptism, the majority of the time we’re speaking of believer’s baptism.
Believer’s baptism takes place:
By immersion
After salvation
In a church of solid Bible doctrine
When we are saved, we are baptized into Jesus.
We are permanently immersed in and made one with Jesus.
That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.John 17:21-23
Our water baptism is a symbolism of our union with Christ.
For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.1 Corinthians 12:13
Our water baptism is an outward symbol of an inward decision.
And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.Acts 8:36-38
Water baptism does not save, only faith in Jesus does.
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.Romans 5:1-2
Baptism into Jesus identifies us with His death.
Baptism into Jesus means a death to our flesh.
Just as Jesus died, when we are born again, we die to our flesh.
Baptism into Jesus identifies us with His resurrection.
Baptism into Jesus means rising to live in Him and for Him.
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.Galatians 2:20
Could we continue to live in sin and be forgiven? Yes, but…
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.Titus 2:11-14
When Jesus died on the cross, my sins were put to death.
When Jesus rose from the grave, my sins were left behind at the cross.
Just as Jesus rose, when we are born again, we rise to new life in Him.
When I died with Jesus, my sin died with me.
When I received life, my sin has lost its power.
If I am free from sin, my life should reflect that.
3Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: 6Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7For he that is dead is freed from sin. Romans 6:3-7
