Romans: The Power of the Gospel Message 129 of 150
Gifts for God's Glory
Pastor Anthony King· November 2, 2025
Romans 12:6-8
A sermon on Romans 12:6-8 and the spiritual gifts God gives every believer to serve others and glorify Him. The gifts differ by His design, but all are essential to a healthy church, and when used faithfully and in love they build up the body of Christ and advance the Gospel.
“Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith;”
Romans 12:6
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
Spiritual Gift: Spiritual gifts are divine enablements given by God’s grace to each believer for serving and building up the body of Christ. They are not earned through merit or effort, but distributed by the Holy Spirit according to His wisdom and purpose. Each gift, whether prophecy, service, teaching, exhortation, giving, leadership, or mercy, is meant to create interdependence within the church so that together we function as one body under Christ.
Spiritual Gifts
1. Prophecy, Speaking forth God’s truth in accordance with the faith. 2. Ministry (Serving), Meeting needs and helping others in practical ways. 3. Teaching, Explaining and clarifying God’s Word. 4. Exhortation, Encouraging, urging, and comforting others toward godly living. 5. Giving, Sharing resources generously and with simplicity. 6. Ruling (Leadership/Administration), Leading diligently and with care. 7. Showing Mercy, Extending compassion and kindness with cheerfulness.
Every believer has received spiritual gifts through God’s grace.
Spiritual gifts are not earned or deserved, but freely given by God to each member of the body of Christ.
But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.1 Corinthians 12:11
Everyone has a purpose. God equips every believer for a unique role in His plan.
But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.Ephesians 4:7
Gifts differ among believers according to God’s will and design.
God uses diversity of gifts to meet the needs of the whole body, so that everyone is strengthened and cared for.
Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.1 Corinthians 12:4
We must embrace our unique individuality in Jesus, rather than comparing ourselves or coveting someone else’s gift.
But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.1 Corinthians 12:18
We misunderstand giftings when we view some gifts as more spiritual or more valuable than others.
We are called to exercise our gifts diligently and faithfully.
Using our gifts is both a privilege and a responsibility. Neglecting them limits the effectiveness of the whole church and hurts the body of Christ.
Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.1 Timothy 4:14
God calls us to serve Him through His church with wholehearted devotion, giving our best.
And what soever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;Colossians 3:23
Spiritual gifts are to be used in love, for the benefit of others and the glory of God.
Using our spiritual gifts must always be motivated by love, not pride or how we can benefit ourselves.
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.1 Corinthians 13:1
God is glorified as we serve others and build up Jesus’ church through our gifts.
As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.1 Peter 4:10-11
Spiritual gifts are given to glorify God and advance the Gospel, not just meet internal church needs.
Know your gift and put it to work. If you don’t know what it is or how to use it, ask your Pastor.
Resist comparison and appreciate the diversity of gifts in the body of Christ. Encourage others in their callings.
Seek opportunities to use your gifts wholeheartedly. Serve with passion and purpose.
Let love and the desire to glorify God motivate everything you do and how you serve.
Remember that God didn’t gift you to serve yourself, but to serve Him.
6Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; 7Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; 8Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness. Romans 12:6-8
