Romans: The Power of the Gospel Message 124 of 150
God’s Irrevocable Promise and the Triumph of Grace
Pastor Anthony King· August 31, 2025
Romans 11:28-32
God's promises to Israel do not change, because His calling and gifts are irrevocable and grounded in His character, not human merit. This sermon shows how His mercy reaches both Jews and Gentiles, using human disobedience to reveal His grace and invite all to salvation through faith.
“As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers’ sakes.”
Romans 11:28
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
Israel is regarded as enemies of the Gospel, but beloved for the sake of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
Israel’s current resistance to the gospel serves God’s broader purpose, but their historical election remains intact because of God’s promises to their fathers.
For the LORD will not cast off his people, neither will he forsake his inheritance.Psalm 94:14
When God chose Israel to be His own people, He bound Himself by His own promises to bring the Jews to salvation and for them to be forever His beloved and holy people.
And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.Genesis 17:7
God’s gifts and calling are irrevocable. He will not retract His promises.
The faithfulness of God’s calling is unchanging, resting on His character rather than human merit or failure.
God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?Numbers 23:19
Every promise God makes is sure and will be fulfilled in His appointed time. Not even Israel’s own rebellion and unbelief can prevent their salvation and restoration.
The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.Psalm 33:11
Mercy has come to the Gentiles through Israel’s unbelief, and Israel will receive mercy in turn.
God often uses apparent rejection to open doors for others, demonstrating His sovereign plan in granting mercy.
The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.Psalm 118:22
The salvation granted to Gentiles is intended to provoke Israel to seek God’s mercy too.
I am sought of them that asked not for me; I am found of them that sought me not: I said, Behold me, behold me, unto a nation that was not called by my name.Isaiah 65:1
God has allowed all people to fall into disobedience so that He might extend His mercy to everyone.
Disobedience is a deliberate and stubborn refusal to be persuaded, believe, acknowledge, or obey.
Human disobedience exposes the universal need for mercy, making all equally dependent upon God’s grace.
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;Romans 3:23
God’s ultimate purpose is to extend mercy to all people who receive it by faith. If there were no disobedience, there would be no need of mercy.
But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)Ephesians 2:4-5
Cultivate a humble heart by remembering that access to God’s mercy is never by entitlement, but by His grace alone.
Refuse to give up on those who seem the most resistant to the Gospel. God’s promises and love is for them, too.
Let God’s faithfulness motivate personal trust and patience, knowing His plans always bring about ultimate good in His time.
Extend the message of grace to all, recognizing that God desires to show mercy to every person, regardless of background or past failures.
28As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers’ sakes. 29For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance. 30For as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief: 31Even so have these also now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy. 32For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all. Romans 11:28-32
