Romans: The Power of the Gospel Message 122 of 150
The Olive Tree: Warning and Hope
Pastor Anthony King· August 17, 2025
Romans 11:13-24
A sermon on Romans 11:13-24 and the olive tree, with a warning against spiritual pride. Gentile believers belong to God's family only by His grace and kindness, and His mercy can restore anyone who turns from unbelief and trusts in Him.
“For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office:”
Romans 11:13
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
Gentile believers must not boast over the Jewish people but recognize their acceptance comes only by faith and God’s kindness.
God’s plan of salvation began with Israel, and Gentiles are blessed only because of God’s mercy to graft them in.
Salvation is of the Jews, and Gentiles partake in their spiritual blessings.
Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.John 4:22
That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:Ephesians 3:6
Any spiritual pride is misplaced, as Gentiles did not establish the root, but are supported by the root.
Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.Galatians 5:26
Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.Proverbs 16:18
The olive tree represents the unity of God’s people, both Jews and Gentiles sharing in God’s covenant promises.
Believing Gentiles are grafted among the branches and partake of the root and richness of God’s blessings.
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.Galatians 3:28
For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;Ephesians 2:14
Both Jewish and Gentile believers are members of one body, joined together by faith in Christ.
So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.Romans 12:5
For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.1 Corinthians 12:13
Pride and unbelief can result in being cut off just as Israel experienced, and God calls all to continue in humble faith.
If God did not spare the natural branches because of unbelief, He will not spare the arrogant or unfaithful.
Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.1 Corinthians 10:12
But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.James 4:6
God shows both kindness and justice. He’s kind to those who keep trusting Him, but He brings judgment to those who turn away.
Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.Romans 11:22
It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.Hebrews 10:31
God’s power and grace offer hope, those who turn from unbelief can be grafted in again, demonstrating God’s ability to restore anyone.
Even those previously cut off can be brought back if they leave unbelief and embrace faith.
Neither shall they defile themselves any more with their idols, nor with their detestable things, nor with any of their transgressions: but I will save them out of all their dwellingplaces, wherein they have sinned, and will cleanse them: so shall they be my people, and I will be their God.Ezekiel 37:23
God’s restoration is not limited by human failure, but is an act of His grace and His faithfulness.
If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he can not deny himself.2 Timothy 2:13
It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.Lamentations 3:22-23
Examine your attitude toward others. Humility must replace pride, knowing that we stand only by God’s mercy and not by personal merit.
Actively seek fellowship across cultural or ethnic lines within the church, recognizing all believers are part of one body in Christ.
Walk by faith with dependence on God’s grace, knowing that spiritual pride or presumption can lead to spiritual destruction.
Offer hope and encouragement to those who have fallen away, trusting that God can restore anyone who truly seeks Him by faith.
13For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office: 14If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might save some of them. 15For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead? 16For if the firstfruit be holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root be holy, so are the branches. 17And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree; 18Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee. 19Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in. 20Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear: 21For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee. 22Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off. 23And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in: for God is able to graff them in again. 24For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and wert graffed contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be graffed into their own olive tree? Romans 11:13-24
