Romans: The Power of the Gospel Message 92 of 150
How to Really Live
Pastor Anthony King· July 14, 2024
Romans 8:12-14
The key to a fruitful life is a life yielded to God. This sermon shows how to really live by surrendering to Him.
“Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.”
Romans 8:12
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
The unsaved man has a desire to live after the flesh.
For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.Romans 8:5
When we are saved:
Our old man dies. Our allegiance to sin dies. Our spirit is made alive. We are made a new creation in Jesus. We begin the process of killing our flesh.
When we accept Jesus as savior, we also confess Him as Lord.
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.Romans 10:9-10
When Jesus is Lord of your life, He is in charge.
And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?Luke 6:46
Just because you say Jesus is Lord, doesn’t mean that He is.
Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.Matthew 7:22-23
The truth of the Gospel is that we change.
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;Titus 2:11-12
If we do not keep our heart calibrated, it will begin to drift toward our flesh.
A desire to be happy is not sinful, but where we find our happiness might be.
Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.Psalm 37:4-5
There is no value found in the flesh, only death.
But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.James 1:14-15
If we keep our heart calibrated, we must actively kill the deeds of the body.
And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.Galatians 5:24
We must submit to the Spirit of God and the Word of God to kill our flesh.
That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.Ephesians 4:22-24
Following the leading of the Holy Spirit is outward evidence of our salvation.
If Jesus is Lord, we will follow Him.
Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness.Psalm 143:10
We are not saved because we follow Him, but we follow Him because we are saved.
For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.Galatians 3:26
We really begin to live when we allow Jesus to reign as Lord and Master of our lives.
Beware of thinking that you “gave up” your sin to follow Jesus.
If you are a child of God, it should show.
12Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. 13For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. 14For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. Romans 8:12-14
