Romans: The Power of the Gospel Message 116 of 150
Jesus is Lord
Pastor Anthony King· July 6, 2025
Romans 10:9-13
This sermon teaches that salvation requires both believing in Jesus and confessing Him as Lord. True confession is more than words: it is a sincere, life-changing submission to Christ's authority, rooted in faith and repentance.
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
Romans 10:9
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
To be saved you must believe and receive.
You must believe and confess Jesus as Lord.
Confessing Jesus as Lord is a public declaration of Jesus’ sovereign authority over one’s life.
To confess Jesus as Lord is to acknowledge His divine authority and submit to His rule. Jesus as Lord means Jesus is in charge of our lives.
Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.Philippians 2:9-11
This confession is not simply saying it aloud, but a heartfelt allegiance that separates genuine faith from empty profession.
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.Matthew 7:21
Confessing Jesus as Lord is an expression of genuine faith that flows from the heart.
True confession comes from a repentant heart that believes in Jesus’ resurrection and saving work.
Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;Acts 3:19
Saving faith is not simply logical agreement, but a personal trust and reliance on Christ for salvation.
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:John 1:12
Confession of Jesus’ lordship is inseparable from faith in His resurrection. Both are required for salvation.
Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.Acts 4:12
Confession of Jesus’ lordship is not a works-based salvation. Jesus’ lordship doesn’t mean you must change to be saved, but that authentic salvation must result in a change.
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;Titus 2:11-12
If you have simply called Jesus Lord, but never submitted your life to Him, you are not saved.
If your profession of Jesus doesn’t match your life, fix it.
Never confuse salvation with sanctification.
Jesus is Lord means he is 100% in charge of my life.
9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. 12For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. 13For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Romans 10:9-13
