Romans: The Power of the Gospel Message 131 of 150
Overcoming With Blessing
Pastor Anthony King· November 16, 2025
Romans 12:14-16
A sermon on Romans 12:14-16: believers overcome evil by blessing those who oppose them, not by retaliating. Christian love answers hatred with prayer, shares in others' joys and sorrows, and pursues unity through humility, so Christians reflect the grace of Christ in a divided world.
“Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.”
Romans 12:14
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
Believers overcome hatred by blessing those who oppose and persecute them.
To bless means seeking God’s goodness for those who harm us, not returning hatred for hatred or violence for violence.
Praying for those who commit violence brings God’s favor upon them and transforms the heart of the believer.
But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.Luke 6:27-28
When evil threatens, believers are called to respond with words and prayers of blessing rather than retaliation or revenge.
And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.Luke 23:33-34
Believers show compassion by mourning with those who grieve and celebrating with those who rejoice.
When tragedy strikes our fellow humans, believers enter into genuine sorrow alongside the hurting, sharing their pain authentically.
When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled, And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see. Jesus wept.John 11:33-35
Real empathy sets aside personal comfort to meet others where they are, whether in deep grief or unexpected joy.
Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.2 Corinthians 1:3-4
Believers pursue unity by living in harmony with one another despite division.
Unity requires working toward peace and having the same mindset, avoiding attitudes of superiority or political hatred.
Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:Hebrews 12:14
Harmony is built when believers intentionally value one another above themselves, even across ideological differences.
Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.Philippians 2:3-4
Believers walk in humility, refusing pride but associating with all people regardless of status.
Pride destroys unity and fuels division, but humility brings believers together and opens the door to genuine fellowship.
But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.James 4:6
Walking in humility means willingly loving and serving all, regardless of their political views, social status, or background.
Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:Philippians 2:5-7
Choose to pray for those who commit violence or spread hatred, asking God to soften hearts and bring repentance rather than seeking revenge.
When we want justice, revenge and punishment and not repentance, we become a Jonah. Resist the temptation to dehumanize those who commit evil acts. All people are made in God’s image and in need of His grace.
Take time to genuinely mourn with those affected by tragedy and violence, offering presence and comfort rather than political commentary or blame.
Be a peacemaker instead of a strife-sower.
14Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not. 15Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. 16Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits. Romans 12:14-16
