Romans: The Power of the Gospel Message 88 of 150
No Condemnation
Pastor Anthony King· June 16, 2024
Romans 8:1
Because we are in Christ Jesus, we no longer face condemnation. This sermon explains what it means to live free from the judgment our sin deserved.
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”
Romans 8:1
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
Before Jesus we were condemned.
Condemnation is the opposite of justification. Condemnation says we are sinful. Justification says we are righteous.
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.Romans 5:8-9
We were condemned by default.
He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.John 3:18
We were the children of wrath.
Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.Ephesians 2:3
We were the children of disobedience.
Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.Ephesians 5:6
We were the children of Satan.
Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.John 8:44
We loved evil.
And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.John 3:19
God is just in His condemnation.
We inherited Adam’s sin nature.
Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:Romans 5:12
While we did not choose Adam’s original sin, we chose to rebel against God.
Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the LORD hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me.Isaiah 1:2
Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.Galatians 5:19-21
Being in Jesus means He has absorbed our condemnation and God’s wrath on our behalf.
Jesus became our sin.
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.2 Corinthians 5:21
Jesus was punished for our sin.
But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.Isaiah 53:5
Jesus sets us free from the power and penalty of our sin.
Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.1 Peter 2:24
Jesus paid our sin debt in full.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.John 5:24
We are secure in Jesus Christ, not in our ability to obey the Law.
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;Titus 3:5
The gift of salvation is good for eternity and cannot be revoked.
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.John 10:27-29
If we rebel against God, we don’t lose our salvation, but we do forfeit our fellowship with Him.
For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.1 Peter 3:12
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. Romans 8:1
