The Role of the Holy Spirit in Our Adoption
Pastor Anthony King· August 4, 2024
Romans 8:14-16
The Holy Spirit plays a major role in our adoption by God. This sermon explains the Spirit's work in making us children of God.
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”
Romans 8:14
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
The Holy Spirit leads God’s children.
*he Spirit guides believers in righteousness.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.Psalm 23:3
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.John 16:13
The Spirit works in conjunction with the Word of God to give us direction.
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.John 14:26
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.Psalm 119:105
Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.Proverbs 3:5-6
The Spirit empowers obedience to God.
And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.Ezekiel 36:27
This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.Galatians 5:16
The Spirit frees us from fear.
The Spirit removes the fear of condemnation.
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.2 Timothy 1:7
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.1 John 4:18
The Spirit gives boldness in our relationship with God.
Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.Hebrews 4:16
In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.Ephesians 3:12
The Spirit confirms our adoption.
“It should be kept in mind that, marvelous as it is, the term adoption does not fully illustrate God’s work of salvation. The believer is also cleansed from sin, saved from its penalty of death, spiritually reborn, justified, sanctified, and ultimately glorified. But those who are saved by their faith in Jesus Christ by the work of His grace have no higher title than that of adopted child of God.”
The Spirit enables intimate communion with God.
And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.Galatians 4:6
For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.Ephesians 2:18
The Spirit assures believers of their adoption, not by feelings, but by truth.
Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.2 Corinthians 1:22
And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.1 John 3:24
God makes certain His children know they are His children.
Many people struggle with doubt concerning salvation, not due to belief, but due to behavior.
The Holy Spirit is a gift God gives only to His children.
If you are struggling with doubt concerning your salvation, this isn’t from your Father.
14For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. 15For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. 16The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: Romans 8:14-16
