Romans 3:10-18
“As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:”
Romans 3:10
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
Whatever is in our hearts will come out in our words.
“*O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.”
—Matthew 12:34–35*
Our words are so powerful, because they provide a window to our heart.
But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.Matthew 15:18
A wise man will think through what to say before saying it.
The heart of the righteous studieth to answer: but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things.Proverbs 15:28
A wise man knows when to keep quiet.
Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.Proverbs 17:28
Mankind’s mouth reeks of death.
(Throat is an open grave)
Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.Proverbs 18:21
Mankind’s words are deceitful.
(Used deceit) Deceit: the action or practice of intentionally misleading someone by concealing or misrepresenting the truth:
Mankind is waiting for the opportunity to sling hurtful words.
(The poison of asps)
Snakes in the Bible are always characterized by those who would appear to do good, but are simply waiting to strike.
But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?Matthew 3:7
We should recognize these people and avoid them.
Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.Romans 16:17-18
Mankind has a habitual, hurtful and angry mouth.
(Full of cursingand bitterness)
The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts. His ways are always grievous; thy judgments are far above out of his sight: as for all his enemies, he puffeth at them. He hath said in his heart, I shall not be moved: for I shall never be in adversity. His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity.Psalm 10:4-7
Cursing: wishing harm upon someone and expressing it publicly.
Our sinful hearts lead to harmful words.
Gossip
Slander
Vulgarity
Obscenity
As God has changed our hearts, He also changes our mouths.
The regenerated man should use his words to build up and give grace.
Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.Ephesians 4:29
10As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: 11There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. 12They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. 13Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: 14Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: 15Their feet are swift to shed blood: 16Destruction and misery are in their ways: 17And the way of peace have they not known: 18There is no fear of God before their eyes. Romans 3:10-18
