Romans 4:18-21
“Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations; according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.”
Romans 4:18
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
Hope: a confident expectation in God based on His character and the promises of His Word.
Abraham believed God, even when it didn’t make sense to believe God.
And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.Genesis 15:5-6
Abraham struggled with faith, yet walked in obedience.
And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am. And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.Genesis 22:1-3
Faith doesn’t mean that you have it all figured out, but you trust that God has it figured out.
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.Isaiah 55:8-9
We set ourselves up for failure when we base our obedience on our expected outcome.
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter. If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.Daniel 3:16-18
Struggling with faith is okay, as long as we come back to the Word of God as our source of Truth.
Struggle indicates that there is still a battle waging and a fight ensuing.
The Bible is durable and can handle questions, doubts and concerns.
I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.Proverbs 8:17
And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.Jeremiah 29:13
Abraham’s faith wasn’t limited by his own weakness.
Abraham and Sarah having a child wasn’t unlikely, it was physically impossible.
At the end of the day, Abraham fully trusted God.
A heart full of faith brings overwhelming peace.
For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.2 Timothy 1:12
A heart full of faith is fully submitted to the sovereignty of God.
God forgets sin, but remembers faith.
He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.Micah 7:19
For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.Psalm 103:11-12
The church needs Christians who are not bound by our own limitations and weak expectations, but are unshackled by radical faith that God can still do anything.
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.Hebrews 11:6
You will never see the things that God wants to accomplish in your life if you continually vacillate between faith and doubt. God always honors faith.
Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house. And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them. And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching.Mark 6:3-6
18Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations; according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be. 19And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara’s womb: 20He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; 21And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. Romans 4:18-21
