Romans: The Power of the Gospel Message 118 of 150
God's Mercy to All
Pastor Anthony King· July 20, 2025
Romans 10:18-21
God's mercy shows in His persistent offer of salvation to Jews and Gentiles alike. This sermon calls us to proclaim the Gospel faithfully, walk in humility, and rejoice that no one is beyond the reach of His grace.
“But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world.”
Romans 10:18
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
Israel has clearly heard the Gospel message, leaving them without excuse.
The proclamation of the Gospel has gone out to all, just as the heavens declare God’s glory.
To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun,Psalm 19:1-4
For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:Romans 1:20
God holds people accountable for revelation received, Israel’s familiarity with the Scriptures increases their responsibility.
And that servant, which knew his lord’s will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.Luke 12:47-48
General Revelation: God’s self-disclosure through nature, conscience, and the created order, revealing His existence, power, and divine nature to all humanity.
Specific Revelation: God’s direct and personal communication to humanity through Scripture, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit, revealing truths necessary for salvation that cannot be known through nature alone.
Israel’s rejection of the Gospel fulfills Old Testament prophecy.
Moses foretold that God would provoke Israel to jealousy by blessing those who are not a nation, the Gentiles.
They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God; they have provoked me to anger with their vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.Deuteronomy 32:21
God’s plan has always included the Gentiles, as seen in Abrahamic Covenant’s promise that all nations would be blessed.
And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.Genesis 12:3
And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth.Isaiah 49:6
Though not seeking God, Gentiles have been graciously brought near.
God’s grace reaches those who did not seek Him, fulfilling Isaiah’s prophecy. “> I am sought of them that asked not for me, I am found of them that sought me not, I said, Behold me, behold me, unto a nation that was not called by my name.” —Isaiah 65:1
Salvation is not based on human effort but on God’s grace and mercy.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.Ephesians 2:8-9
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;Titus 3:5
God’s persistent offer of salvation is met with Israel’s continued disobedience.
God’s patience is seen in His continual invitation, yet Israel’s response is stubbornness.
I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people, which walketh in a way that was not good, after their own thoughts;Isaiah 65:2
Rejecting God’s grace leads to spiritual hardening and loss of blessing.
He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.Proverbs 29:1
While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.Hebrews 3:15
Proclaim the Gospel clearly and faithfully, knowing that God holds people responsible for the truth they hear.
Recognize the danger of religious pride and self-reliance, and instead walk in humility remembering salvation is by faith alone.
Grow in appreciation of the wideness of God’s mercy, remembering that no one is beyond the reach of His grace.’
Guard your heart against complacency, remembering that knowledge of the Truth without obedience leads to greater accountability.
18But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world. 19But I say, Did not Israel know? First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you. 20But Esaias is very bold, and saith, I was found of them that sought me not; I was made manifest unto them that asked not after me. 21But to Israel he saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people. Romans 10:18-21
