Romans: The Power of the Gospel Message 130 of 150
Genuine Love in Action
Pastor Anthony King· November 9, 2025
Romans 12:9-13
A sermon on Romans 12:9-13 and genuine love in action. Christian love rejects sin, puts others first, and serves God with passion, endurance and joy, and a life of holiness, generosity and hospitality becomes visible proof of discipleship to the world.
“Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.”
Romans 12:9
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
True Christian love hates sin and loves righteousness.
Genuine love is rooted in truth and purity. It rejects sin and embraces what pleases God.
My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.1 John 3:18
Holiness and love always go together. Hating evil and cleaving to good keep our love from being hypocritical.
Ye that love the LORD, hate evil: he preserveth the souls of his saints; he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked.Psalm 97:10
Believers are called to honor each other with deep affection and humility.
Christian love values others above self. It delights in showing honor and care toward fellow believers.
Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.Philippians 2:3
The church community thrives when love is demonstrated in genuine, brotherly affection and mutual encouragement.
But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another.1 Thessalonians 4:9
God’s people must serve Him and others with zeal, persistence, and spiritual fervor.
Passionate, enthusiastic service reflects the work of the Holy Spirit and is sustained by ongoing hope, patience, and prayer.
And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.Galatians 6:9
A vibrant spiritual life is marked by rejoicing in hope, enduring hardship with joy, and leaning on Jesus for everything.
I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.Philippians 4:13
Love overflows in generosity and hospitality toward others, especially those in need.
Sacrificial generosity is a practical demonstration of God’s love, meeting both spiritual and material needs.
But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.Hebrews 13:16
Opening our hearts and homes to others shows Christ’s love to both fellow believers and to those who don’t yet know Him.
Use hospitality one to another without grudging.1 Peter 4:9
Examine your motives for loving others. Let your actions flow from a desire for holiness and truth, not mere appearance.
Treat fellow believers with warmth and respect. Find ways to show tangible affection and honor in daily life.
Keep your passion for serving Jesus hot.
Be generous and open-hearted. This is a safeguard against selfishness and pride.
Intentionally make hospitality a regular part of your life and ministry.
Our love for others is the supreme evidence that we are disciples of Jesus.
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.John 13:35
9Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. 10Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; 11Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; 12Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; 13Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality. Romans 12:9-13
