Romans: The Power of the Gospel Message 145 of 150
Detours, Delays and the Glory of God
Pastor Anthony King· August 16, 2026
Romans 15:22-25
A sermon on Romans 15:22-25: God often uses delays, detours and unexpected turns to accomplish His purposes and show His glory. Instead of growing discouraged when plans change, believers trust His timing, stay faithful where He has placed them, and follow Him one step at a time.
“For which cause also I have been much hindered from coming to you.”
Romans 15:22
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
God will delay the thing you want, in order to hold you in the thing you already have.
God often keeps you with the assignment in front of you instead of the opportunity you wish you had.
But I will tarry at Ephesus until Pentecost. For a great door and effectual is opened unto me, and there are many adversaries.1 Corinthians 16:8-9
And say to Archippus, Take heed to the ministry which thou hast received in the Lord, that thou fulfil it.Colossians 4:17
Sometimes God overrules the enemy’s hindrance, and sometimes He uses it, and either way His plan holds.
But we, brethren, being taken from you for a short time in presence, not in heart, endeavoured the more abundantly to see your face with great desire. Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us.1 Thessalonians 2:17-18
God plants the desire in your heart years before He opens the door.
Making request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you. For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established; That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me. Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles.Romans 1:10-13
God’s purpose will stand. You just may not be the one to carry it out.
Now it came to pass, as David sat in his house, that David said to Nathan the prophet, Lo, I dwell in an house of cedars, but the ark of the covenant of the LORD remaineth under curtains. Then Nathan said unto David, Do all that is in thine heart; for God is with thee. And it came to pass the same night, that the word of God came to Nathan, saying, Go and tell David my servant, Thus saith the LORD, Thou shalt not build me an house to dwell in:1 Chronicles 17:1-4
God will send you to Jerusalem before He ever lets you go to Rome.
God reveals His will one step at a time, so you cannot afford to fix your eyes only on the final destination.
Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia, After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not. And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas. And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us. And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them.Acts 16:6-10
Obedience is saying yes to God’s next step instead of forcing your own plan.
While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee. Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them.Acts 10:19-20
You must hold your plans and your timing loosely while you trust God’s wisdom completely.
A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.Proverbs 16:9
Write your plans in pencil.
Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.James 4:13-15
God will overrule your plans without ever breaking a single promise, and that is His glory.
God never calls an audible or goes off-script, because nothing ever surprises Him.
And the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good cheer, Paul: for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome.Acts 23:11
We must decide which script we trust. Ours, which feels clear but is short-sighted, or God’s, which can feel confusing but is always wise.
Faith means trusting God’s bigger story when your smaller story feels like it’s falling apart.
But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.Genesis 50:20
By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.Hebrews 11:8-10
Start your planning with surrender, not control.
Treat every delay as a question: “Lord, what are You doing right here?”
Stay faithful to the clear, obvious things while you wait on the unclear, future things.
Serve Jesus and walk by faith wherever God actually puts you, not just where you hoped you’d be by now.
22For which cause also I have been much hindered from coming to you. 23But now having no more place in these parts, and having a great desire these many years to come unto you; 24Whensoever I take my journey into Spain, I will come to you: for I trust to see you in my journey, and to be brought on my way thitherward by you, if first I be somewhat filled with your company. 25But now I go unto Jerusalem to minister unto the saints. Romans 15:22-25
