Romans: The Power of the Gospel Message 147 of 150
A Life That Blesses Others
Pastor Anthony King· August 30, 2026
Romans 16:1-2
A sermon on Romans 16:1-2 and Phebe: a life that blesses others. Like Phebe, believers serve their church as family, make themselves useful wherever help is needed, and faithfully support others, not to be saved, but because those who are saved love to serve.
“I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea: That ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever business she hath need of you: for she hath been a succourer of many, and of myself also.”
Romans 16:1-2
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
Be a servant worth commending.
Live so that your others could commend you without hesitation.
And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; And to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. And be at peace among yourselves.1 Thessalonians 5:12-13
Live so that God can commend your life.
His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.Matthew 25:21
Serve your actual church, not a church in your imagination.
For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren,Hebrews 2:11
Serve in a way that makes you family, not a spectator.
Move from attending to belonging.
He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.Matthew 10:40
Serving others is spiritual greatness, not being in a position or title.
But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.Mark 10:43-45
Make yourself useful in “whatsoever” is needed.
Kill the phrases “that’s not my job, responsibility or ministry.”
As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.1 Peter 4:10
Serve what’s necessary, not what’s convenient.
For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again unto my necessity.Philippians 4:16
Become a benefactor of many, starting with one.
Build a reputation for helping people, one person at a time.
If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?1 Corinthians 9:11
Stand behind others with sacrificial support.
And I intreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellowlabourers, whose names are in the book of life.Philippians 4:3
Examine your commendability this week.
Volunteer for something with no spotlight attached.
Attach yourself to a gospel need and meet it.
Refresh a servant who refreshes others.
Serving God doesn’t save us, but saved people serve.
1I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea: 2That ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever business she hath need of you: for she hath been a succourer of many, and of myself also. Romans 16:1-2
