Romans: The Power of the Gospel Message 100 of 150
Hope and Our Heart
Pastor Anthony King· September 1, 2024
Romans 8:23-27
Christians have a confident expectation in God's promises. This sermon looks at that hope, and at the confidence that His Spirit helps us in our weakness.
“And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.”
Romans 8:23
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
Hope: A confident expectation of God based upon His character and the promises of His Word.
Hope goes hand in hand with faith.
Faith believes God in the past and present realities.
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.Hebrews 11:1
Hope looks forward to the promises of God.
For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.Romans 15:4
We are saved by faith.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.Ephesians 2:8-9
Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.Galatians 2:16
We are saved by hope.
Hope causes us to look at future glorification, not future punishment.
While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.2 Corinthians 4:18
Our hope in the faithfulness of God comes from the Word.
For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.Romans 15:4
Hope is a belief in the future faithfulness of God.
Living our faith under pressure, increases our steadfast endurance and our hope.
The Holy Spirit helps us during times of weakness by interceding.
The Spirit prays for us when we don’t know how we should pray.
The Spirit prays for us when our heart is too heavy for words.
God the Father understands and accepts the Spirit’s intercession for us.
God searches our hearts and knows the mind of the Spirit.
I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.Jeremiah 17:10
The Spirit’s intercession aligns perfectly with God’s will for the saints.
Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.Jeremiah 29:12
And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:1 John 5:14
Building your faith builds your hope.
As you see God’s hand of faithfulness in your life, your hope will grow.
When you are overwhelmed, come to your Father. The Spirit will take it from there.
23And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body. 24For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? 25But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it. 26Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. Romans 8:23-27
