Romans 6:14
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
We are freed from sin, but not free to sin.
While God’s ceremonial, religious law has been fulfilled, his moral law is still in effect.
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.Matthew 5:17-18
We are not under the law, but are not free from the demands of righteousness.
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;Titus 2:11-12
The law no longer restrains us from sinning, but a heart of gratitude and worship which is led by the Holy Spirit.
For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.Galatians 5:13-14
When we were saved, we were set free from the slavery of sin.
Those who don’t want to follow Jesus because they are afraid of losing their freedom are not truly free.
Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world: But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.Galatians 4:3-5
Now that we are free from sin, we are slaves to righteousness.
Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.Romans 6:11
You will always have a master. We are slaves to sin and Satan is lord or we are slaves to righteousness and Jesus is Lord. There is no middle ground.
One master will kill, steal and destroy.
The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.John 10:10
The other will give you the life that your heart desires.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.Galatians 5:22-23
There is no small sin. Sin is a heart pattern of rebellion against our Master.
We must protect our heart against creeping sin in the same way we would protect the front door of our home.
As you have victory over sin, begin looking for the next opponent to make war upon.
Our obedience comes not from a list of rules and regulations to follow, but from a heart that is fixed upon Jesus.
14For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. 15What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. 16Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? 17But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. 18Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. 19I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. Romans 6:14-19
