Romans 5:1-2
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
We are not saved by our works.
We are justified by faith.
Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.Romans 3:28
Our works only bring about God’s wrath.
Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.Romans 4:4
Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.Romans 4:15
The primary effect of justification is peace with God.
Without Jesus, we are at war with God. We are His declared enemies.
For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.Romans 5:10
Enemy: a person who is actively opposed or hostile to someone or something:
Our fleshly nature is at war with God from our very beginning.
Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.Romans 8:7
No one is neutral with God. You either have made peace or you are His enemy.
He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.Matthew 12:30
For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.Romans 5:10
Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.Romans 8:7
Not only are unbelievers enemies of God, but He is an enemy of all unbelievers.
God hates sin.
God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.Psalm 7:11
All of God’s enemies are under the wrath of God.
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;Romans 1:18
The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.Psalm 34:16
Justification brings reconciliation.
Peace with God is possible by the cross.
And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.Colossians 1:20
Peace is not a feeling, but a fact.
Peace with God brought not by our works, but by our faith.
This peace is permanent. Those who are children will never be come enemies again.
Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.Hebrews 7:25
Jesus doesn’t just broker peace, He is our peace.
For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;Ephesians 2:14
While the peace here speaks of no longer being the enemies of God, there is a peace that is a rest to our souls that comes from knowing that we are the children of God.
1Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: 2By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Romans 5:1-2
