Romans: Saved With Purpose
Pastor Anthony King· May 8, 2022
Romans 1:5-7
“By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name:”
Romans 1:5
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
We are saved by the grace of God.
We are not saved by our own works.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.Ephesians 2:8-9
The only thing we bring to our salvation is our sin, faith and repentance.
For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;Titus 3:3-6
When we try to add our works to our salvation, we deny the power of Jesus’ sacrifice.
Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:Romans 3:24
We are saved to be messengers.
We tell of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.Matthew 28:19-20
Gospel means “good news”.
God • Man • Jesus • Response
Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:1 Corinthians 15:1-4
We are saved to bring others to Jesus.
Our lives should be characterized by a contagious faith.
For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing.1 Thessalonians 1:8
The power is not in you, but in the Gospel.
Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:Romans 16:25-26
We are saved for the glory of God.
While we are beneficiaries of God’s grace, we are saved to exalt His name. “ABOVE ALL” Crucified Laid behind the stone You lived to die Rejected and alone Like a rose trampled on the ground You took the fall And thought of me Above all
That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.Philippians 2:10-11
I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name’s sake.1 John 2:12
Questions We Must Ask
Am I saved?
Am I sharing the Gospel?
Does my life bring others to Jesus?
Does my life give glory to God?
If we are not living out our purpose, we will struggle to find meaning in life.
5By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name: 6Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ: 7To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 1:5-7
