Romans: The Power of the Gospel Message 132 of 150
Conquering Evil with Good
Pastor Anthony King· November 23, 2025
Romans 12:17-21
A sermon on Romans 12:17-21 and conquering evil with good. Christians reject revenge, trust God's perfect justice, and bless even those who mistreat them, and by loving their enemies they show the transforming power of the Gospel and break the cycle of hatred.
“Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.”
Romans 12:17
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
Believers refuse retaliation by never repaying evil for evil.
Christians must reject the natural human instinct to strike back when hurt, choosing instead to respond with righteousness.
Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.Proverbs 20:22
This command applies to all people without exception, requiring believers to break the cycle of revenge that destroys communities.
For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:1 Peter 2:21-23
As Christians, we must be careful that our conduct does not betray the high standards of the Gospel.
Believers actively pursue peace with all people as much as possible.
Peace must be the believer’s goal, requiring intentional effort to live harmoniously even with difficult people.
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.Matthew 5:9
While others may reject peace, believers bear responsibility to do everything within their power to maintain it.
Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.Matthew 5:13-14
Believers trust God’s justice by leaving all vengeance to Him.
Vengeance belongs exclusively to God, who alone has perfect knowledge and righteous judgment to handle all wrongs.
Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.Hebrews 4:13
Personal revenge usurps God’s role as judge and demonstrates a lack of trust in His perfect justice.
Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you; And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:2 Thessalonians 1:6-8
Believers overcome evil by actively doing good to their enemies.
Christians conquer evil not through passive resistance but through active good deeds that demonstrate Christ’s love.
But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.Luke 6:35
Acts of kindness top evildoers shows the transforming power of the Gospel in practical ways.
Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?Romans 2:4
Four Mindsets Christians Must Reject
The Revenge Mindset - “They hurt me, so I must hurt them back.”
The Self-Protection Mindset - “I must defend my reputation and honor at all costs.”
The Justice-Taking Mindset - “If I don’t make them pay, no one will.”
The Bitterness Mindset - “I have every right to hate them for what they did.”
Choose to pray for those who have hurt you or hurt others, asking God to bring them to repentance rather than planning retaliation yourself.
Look for specific ways to show kindness to difficult people, demonstrating that evil can be conquered through good rather than more evil.
When wronged, immediately commit the situation to God’s perfect justice rather than plotting personal revenge or harboring bitterness.
Work actively to bring peace and healing to situations, showing that followers of Jesus offer hope rather than adding to the cycle of strife.
17Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. 18If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. 19Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. 20Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. 21Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:17-21
