The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
Sin dishonors God.
Jesus came to save us from our sins.
For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.Luke 19:10
Jesus was punished for our sin.
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.2 Corinthians 5:21
God went to extraordinary lengths to deliver us from our sin.
Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.Romans 6:6
We must do away with the idea that God is indifferent toward or, in some way, soft on sin.
For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:1 Peter 3:18
#Our sin does not glorify God. There was a foolish argument of how our sinfulness demonstrates and exalts God’s holiness, so our sin can be beneficial, because it makes God appear more righteous.
If that were true and my sin glorified God, then He would be wrong for punishing sin.
And if ye will not yet for all this hearken unto me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins.Leviticus 26:18
And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.Isaiah 13:11
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.Romans 6:23
How could God exercise judgment against sin if it was glorifying to Him?
But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;Romans 2:5
And he shall judge the world in righteousness, he shall minister judgment to the people in uprightness.Psalm 9:8
Before the LORD; for he cometh to judge the earth: with righteousness shall he judge the world, and the people with equity.Psalm 98:9
Can God bring good and glory from sin?
Absolutely, YES! God delights in restorative and redemptive work.
But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:1 Corinthians 1:30
In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;Ephesians 1:7
In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:Colossians 1:14
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.2 Corinthians 5:17
Can God continue to accomplish His will and be glorified despite our foolishness and sinfulness?
Absolutely, YES! God’s sovereign will continues to unfold despite our own shortcomings.
Should we sin willingly in hopes that God will restore, redeem and be glorified?
ABSOLUTELY NOT! We cannot presume upon the grace of God.
“For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Jude 4
You are free to choose your sin, but you cannot choose your consequences.
For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.Hebrews 12:6
Grace that is indifferent to sin or abused as a license to sin is cheap grace.
For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.Galatians 5:13
God’s glory and His blessings are magnified through an obedient, consecrated, surrendered life.
1What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision? 2Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God. 3For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect? 4God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged. 5But if our unrighteousness commend the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who taketh vengeance? (I speak as a man) 6God forbid: for then how shall God judge the world? 7For if the truth of God hath more abounded through my lie unto his glory; why yet am I also judged as a sinner? 8And not rather, (as we be slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say,) Let us do evil, that good may come? whose damnation is just. Romans 3:1-8
