Romans: The Power of the Gospel Message 126 of 150
Transforming the Heart and Mind
Pastor Anthony King· September 21, 2025
Romans 12:1-2
A sermon on Romans 12:1-2: true worship is surrendering your whole life to God in response to His mercy. It warns against conforming to the world and calls believers to be transformed by renewing their minds through God's Word, so they can know and gladly obey His good, acceptable and perfect will.
“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
Romans 12:1-2
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
Because of God’s abundant mercies, believers are called to present their whole lives as a living sacrifice to Him.
God’s mercy motivates our surrender. We love Him because He first loved us.
We love him, because he first loved us.1 John 4:19
All true worship begins with yielding our lives to God, not just outward rituals.
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.Galatians 2:20
Worship is not confined to rituals but is a lifestyle of obedience.
Devoting oneself to God in this way is both a reasonable and spiritual act of worship.
God desires true spiritual worship that engages the heart and mind, not empty tradition.
God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.John 4:24
This wholehearted devotion is fitting because of all that God has done for us in Christ.
And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.2 Corinthians 5:15
Believers must refuse to be shaped by the pattern and values of this world.
Friendship with the world brings spiritual compromise and harms our relationship with God.
Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.James 4:4
Separation from worldly influences is vital for purity and spiritual growth.
Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,2 Corinthians 6:17
True transformation happens as believers let their minds be renewed, enabling them to discern and obey God’s perfect will.
Renewal begins with God’s Word, changing our thinking and values from within. The battle for holiness begins in the mind.
Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.Psalm 119:11
This renewed mind empowers believers to recognize, desire, and follow God’s good and perfect will.
Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.Ephesians 5:17
Transformation is not automatic. We must yield to the Spirit’s work.
Sanctification is God’s will for every Christian.
Begin each day by offering your life, plans, and desires to God as an act of worship, recognizing His mercies.
Assess your daily habits and influences. Intentionally remove practices or associations that conform you to the world’s values.
Prioritize time in God’s Word to continually renew your mind and guard your heart from spiritual drift.
Seek to discern and actively obey God’s will in every area of life, trusting that His purposes are always good, acceptable, and perfect.
1I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Romans 12:1-2
