Romans: The Power of the Gospel Message 125 of 150
It's About God's Glory
Pastor Anthony King· September 14, 2025
Romans 11:33-36
A sermon on Romans 11:33-36: God's greatness is beyond human understanding, and all glory belongs to Him alone. No one can counsel Him or put Him in their debt, because He is the source, sustainer and purpose of all things, so believers are called to worship humbly, surrender fully, and reflect His glory in every part of life.
“O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!”
Romans 11:33
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
The Greek word doxa means glory, God’s greatness on display. It speaks of His majesty, His beauty, His worth, and the praise He deserves. Glory isn’t something we give to God to make Him greater, but the recognition and reflection of the greatness He already has.
Glory is simply God’s greatness made visible and our worship sent back to Him.
The grand finale of the doctrinal richness of the preceding portion of Paul’s letter thus far is “glory to God.”
We cannot fully comprehend God.
Who but God could have conceived a plan that would turn disobedience into an occasion for mercy and in the process reach out universally to all who would believe?
His judgments are unsearchable. We cannot trace His decisions or second-guess His providence.
O LORD, how great are thy works! and thy thoughts are very deep.Psalm 92:5
His ways are past finding out. What God is doing stretches higher than human logic or reason.
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.Isaiah 55:8-9
We cannot counsel God.
God doesn’t need our advice. His mind is infinite, ours is finite.
Who hath directed the Spirit of the LORD, or being his counsellor hath taught him?Isaiah 40:13
God’s wisdom silences our pride.
Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge? Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me. Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.Job 38:2-4
We cannot obligate God.
God doesn’t owe anyone anything. He already owns all things.
Who hath prevented me, that I should repay him? whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine.Job 41:11
God is the Giver, not the Receiver. He gives life, breath, and everything we have.
God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;Acts 17:24-25
If God needed something, He wouldn’t ask us.
For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills. I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine. If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof.Psalm 50:10-12
God is all and over all.
Of Him: God is the source. Everything begins with Him.
For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.Colossians 1:16-17
Through Him: God is the sustainer. Everything continues by His power.
But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.1 Corinthians 8:6
To Him: God is the target. Everything exists to display His glory.
Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.Revelation 4:11
Worship humbly. Trust God’s wisdom when His ways don’t make sense.
Surrender fully. Stop trying to give God advice. Submit your plans to Him.
Give freely. Serve without bargaining. God owes us nothing but gives us everything.
Live doxologically. Arrange every part of your life to maximize His glory.
33O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! 34For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? 35Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? 36For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen. Romans 11:33-36
